Continuing with the Portfolio Migration

The 3D gallery is mostly converted over and pruned.  The aesthetics are consistent, but I have to add descriptions to the single images yet.

I also started to build a third gallery. http://www.garydraws.com/wordpress/?page_id=1432 This one is just entitled Games. It’s a way to separate any interactive projects I’ve worked on. The gallery is mostly void of content at the moment, but I’ll be pulling together some JCS work in the coming days.

Next stop, the 2D gallery.

Back in Action

To kick things off, I have started to make some basic revisions all around my site. A lot of them are subtle, but they help in the overall flow of the site. I’ve been pruning unnecessary content and focusing on cleaning up my portfolio pages.

You can check out the portfolio changes here http://www.garydraws.com/wordpress/?page_id=95

It’s all very crude yet, as I migrate and update a bunch of information, but it’s still loads better than the previous iteration, which is why I’m okay with keeping this transitional state live.

Rather than a simple page with individual pictures, as it previously existed, I’m trying to lump projects together in their own gallery pages so I can afford the space to properly explain each piece and display the process more clearly for updates going forward. It’s an obvious change but something I sacrificed in exchange for quicker updates.

I will continue to work on updating the rest of my online portfolio for a while yet. Once that’s out of the way, I want to get right to work on building portfolio content. I’m still working on prioritizing the list of projects I hope to complete over the next 6-9 months, but here is a small idea of some of the stuff planned.

Dailies – Daily sketches or Zbrush sculpts that will just be practice to hone my craft and prepare me for some of the larger, more time-intensive projects. These will go until I start focusing on specifics within the larger projects. These will range from experimenting with designs, poses, compositions, color theories, techniques, etc. It’s just an open forum to loosen up. Anything particularly strong to come out of here will likely be given extra time to develop into a complete piece.

Greezer update – I want to texture and finish modeling Greezer. Then repose him into a stronger composition.

Tim Sweeney update – This was a first attempt at making an UT3 skin, so there are a lot of weaknesses in this model. I want to go in and fix up the model so he has a stronger outline and better textures. I won’t limit him to UT3 though since it’s an antiquated release of the Unreal Engine 3, and I want to present the fixed model in the best way by using the later versions of the Unreal Engine.

Female Cog (Gears of War) – Taking some advice I received from Valve, I want to develop a unique character from an existing universe and show every step along the way. Every design decision and element that goes into the final product will presented. This will be the biggest project I embark on, and it needs to be the most polished. So it’s likely to come a bit later in my timeline, once I feel comfortable enough in my abilities to properly render her. This will be a complete game model ready for use in the Unreal Engine.

Street Fighter III – Similar to the female cog, I want to try a couple universe-driven designs of new characters. They won’t be taken as far, but they should function well as design challenges.

I’m primarily working on my 3D and texture work since I feel I have the most to gain from that at this point.

This is all on top of the various commissions and contract work I’ll be doing to stay alive.

Things will be slow for a bit while I prepare the upcoming projects. There won’t be many visual updates, so, for the time being, I won’t be doing daily updates. Instead, I’ll just post any progress I have on Sunday evenings, as I have done in the past.

For anybody new here, I always post close to midnight (if not a bit after) because I tend to work late. If I say updates are going to be a certain day, your best bet is to check the following morning.
